THE KERNEL

Like the kernel of a nut, the kernel is the first stage of construction and is the heart of all IOOSQM designs.

The kernel consists of spaces for Kitchen, Bathroom, eating and sleeping. The kernel provides accommodation suitable for a single person or couple. The kernel can be as compact as 25 square metres in area.

Subsequent stages of construction are designed to provide additional bedrooms, extension to living area or kitchen, or outdoor living areas.

TYPOLOGIES

Varying design typologies have been developed which can be customised to respond to specific client requirements and site constraints such as site area, orientation, slope, access and outlook. Typologies can also be adapted to suit inner urban sites with zero boundary setback, if required.

Design typologies allow for varying roof, window and cladding materials in accordance with client preferences or statutory requirements such as bushfire resistance. Roof form can be customised to reflect client preference.

Typologies can be customised to address specific environmental performance targets such as Passive House certification.

Typologies generally employ simple roof forms and a rational structural grid in order to simplify construction.

If necessary, further design typologies can be developed or modified in response to particular client requirements, such as accessibility for a resident in a wheelchair.

A SMALL HOUSE NOT A TINY HOUSE

IOOSQM, by architect Roger Wyatt, is an approach to designing living environments which are compact and thoughtful, and have been specifically designed to allow for staged construction.

This design approach responds to those who wish to reduce consumption and minimise impact on resources, by living within a compact environment.

Compact environments provide all that is required for living within a modest floor area, by ensuring space is optimised without undue spatial constraints. Easy to heat, easy to clean, easy to live in - a compact environment means a simpler life.

Staged construction allows the building to evolve to suit the life cycle of the occupants, and allows construction costs to be spread over an extended period.
